A lot of WAHMs are in direct sales and very often find themselves needing their children to be seen and not heard because such a large amount of the sales are made while doing demonstrations, usually not in their own home, but someone else’s. The most oblivious solution to this is to have the other parent or family member watch the children while you went to work. This is not always an option, however. You could hire a babysitter to travel with you, assuming you have checked with the hostess. Be sure to let the attendees know a sitter will be there so they don’t have an excuse not to come to the party. Of course, the best part of that is that more people will come and more money will be spent.
If you just need some one every once in a while so you can have a ‘get it done’ day, consider setting up a system with your friends and neighbors. For instance, everyone can make a schedule of when they would be available to watch kids. Then you can all take turns watching each others children.
Another free or cost option may be with your place of worship. Some places offer a program that allows you to drop of your children for a few hours at no charge so you can get some time to yourself. Check with your local libraries for story time. If they allow it, you can leave your children while the Liberian read and an activity or craft is done afterward.
If you are looking for some quiet time to get some work done, but the children don’t necessarily have to be outside the home, hire a trusted neighborhood teenager to come over and play with the children while you are tucked away. That way, you will save the time of getting them ready to leave the house and having to pick them up again. If you have a job where you are gone frequently, see if your friends or family will watch the children in exchange for your product or service. You may be surprised how many people will be happy to make this arrangement.
One thing to keep in mind if you are finding care for your child, is that you shouldn’t feel guilty about it. You may even consider placing your children in daycare part time for a set amount of hours per week. You are not taking anything away from the children. True, you may have thought that working at home was the perfect way to spend time with your children, but there are times your job is going to need your full attention. If you are able to spend 4 hours a day giving 100%, it will be more beneficial then spending 8 hours at 50%. You will be able to spend more quality time with your children.
