What is Craigslist?
For those of you who have heard the name but don’t have a clue what it means, here is an explanation. Craigslist was developed by Craig Newmark in San Francisco, CA in 1995. Nowadays, you hear almost as much about this site as you do about eBay.
The website resource is similar to a newspaper want ad page: classified ads are listed for everything from household appliances and clothing to cars and pets. From A to Z, you can find just about anything you are looking for on Craigslist. It is an Internet based resource of stellar proportions.
You learn more about your community when you use this service. Whether you are trying to meet new people (friends and/or love interests), buy a much-needed appliance, sell unused items or find a job, you can do so within your community. Craigslist is all about connections – person to person, business to person or business to business.
Craigslist is governed by communities and forums. You might be wondering how someone in Fresno, California can find a sofa and not wind up buying it from a seller who lives in Tampa, Florida. The classified listings are divided up by city so you can be assured that your transaction will take place within your own city and possibly in your own neighborhood.
Depending on where you live, there is a webpage either for your city or a nearby one within your state. Craigslist is divided into general categories so it is easier to find the items that you want to view and possibly buy. For instance, if you are looking for a stove, you might want to look under the topic, “For Sale.” Underneath each major topic are sub-categories. For a stove, try “Household appliances.”
One of the features that make Craigslist so popular is the fact that many services are free. Yes, we said that they were free. You can post ads for free and also browse any city site that you like for free as well.
The site has to generate money but they do so from certain specialized type of ads that requires a fee to list. This includes certain housing listings. They don’t use banner advertising. For the types of items that many people are selling, creating ad postings and selling your items is free.
With over four billion page views each month, your ads on Craigslist will get some much-wanted attention. But, before you begin counting the dollars in your head, here is some more information about the site and how to use it.
