Stay the Course with Your Decision to be a Work At Home Mom
How many times have you felt like you had to be on the defensive when you tell people you are a WAHM? They always seem to say something along the lines of “when are you going to get a real job?” or “I bet that’s easy.” Those types of comments can leave you feeling like you are not a contributing member of society even though you probably work harder for your money than they do. Following are a few tips for dealing with people who don’t realize they are being insensitive.
A very important thing to keep in mind when you encounter this is that the only time ‘work at home’ is in the forefront is when it is on the evening news when a scam has been uncovered. The person may actually think they are protecting you from a similar fate. Most people have no idea that there are actually legitimate ways to make money at home.
If the comments are coming from a person who you don’t know or only run into every once in a while, the best thing you can do is to laugh it off and change the subject. On the other hand, if this is someone you see frequently, you may want to take the time to tell them why you have chosen this line of work as opposed to a traditional position. Even if they don’t understand, they may back off.
If the person does understand that you are not being scammed and you are really enjoying what you are doing, it may turn out that they are a little jealous of your decision and wish they had what it takes to do the same.
The most important thing is to never allow someone make you feel like you are not worthy just because your office happens to be in the spare bedroom. You are still a working mom and you are bringing money into the household. By keeping a high confidence level, you will be more successful in every part of your life.
